The National Mall

The National Mall was originally created as the "central axis" of the District's monumental core. The design plans for the Mall, created by L'Enfant, were largely forgotten because the area was used as a base for the Civil War, but later was built.

The National Mall is surrounded by many museums, including entrances to underground museums, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. From the grounds of the Mall you can see monuments, museums and other tourist attractions which you can visit.

The Smithsonian was the earliest building on the Mall, and many other buildings such as The Freer Gallery of Art, The Joseph Hershhorn Museum, The National Air and Space Museum and many others can be accessed from the Mall. It's a great place to visit in D.C. since there are so many historical places to tour and visit!
